When Rolex introduced the Cosmograph Daytona in 1963, it was built as a tool watch for racing drivers, precise, legible, and rugged. But one small design choice would make a handful of these watches into legends.

A subset of Daytonas were fitted with an unusual dial: contrasting sub-registers, block-style numerals, and a distinctive stepped minute track that gave the watch an art deco character unlike anything else on the wrist. At the time, collectors weren't especially drawn to them. They were considered eccentric, even a hard sell.

Then Paul Newman entered the picture. The actor and avid racer wore his own Daytona constantly, a gift from his wife Joanne Woodward, inscribed on the caseback with the words "Drive Carefully Me." Photographs of Newman behind the wheel, watch on wrist, began circulating, and the exotic dial variant slowly picked up the nickname that would define it forever: the "Paul Newman" dial.
